Liverpool need 'a miracle' to win the Premier League title, says Dirk Kuyt

Dirk Kuyt believes Liverpool now require “a bit of a miracle” if they are to win the Premier League title.

For the second match running Liverpool were involved in a 4-4 draw, this time against Arsenal. The point was enough to take them top of the league on goal difference, but the two dropped meant the odds have shortened on Manchester United – who have the same points tally but have played two games less – retaining their title.

The Dutch midfielder says that Liverpool face an uphill battle to end the club’s 19-year wait for league success, but insists no-one at Anfield will give up the fight.

“It is harder after last night because we knew before the game that we needed to win to keep the pressure on,” Kuyt said. “But at least we got a draw and didn’t lose and we have to keep fighting until the very end.

“We have to hope for a bit of a miracle now as it has become more difficult than it already was but you have seen a team that has not given up and we will never give up. So let’s hope that a miracle can happen”

Andrey Arshavin scored all four of Arsenal’s goals, while Yossi Benayoun and Fernando Torres claimed two apiece to secure a point for Rafa Benitez’ side. However, Kuyt acknowledged that Liverpool would need to cut out the mistakes to keep the pressure on United.

“We played a good game and we only made four mistakes in the 90 minutes but they cost us two points,” he said. "We need to keep our focus on our next game. It will be difficult but as long as we keep winning our own games then maybe they will struggle.They have two games in hand so they could take a six point lead so they will have to lose twice but that can happen.

“The point we took is an important one because otherwise we could have ended up seven points behind and that would have made it almost impossible.”
